I can’t quite say this is the one I’ve been waiting for —that’s Halo 3—but Halo 2 joined the Master Chief Collection on PC Tuesday night, and it’s an ideal place to start really devoting time to Halo’s online multiplayer. It’s still fun, but not a game I’d dump hours of time into. Halo 2, even after 15 years, feels just deep enough. It’s still the kind of multiplayer game that can demands precision aiming, tight teamwork, and intricate map knowledge to master. This is the moment on PC many Halo fans have been waiting for and after a few hours of testing I can say that if you plan to jump in now, be prepared to run into some bugs.
As I wrote in my feature on Industries’ journey to bring the Halo series back to PC , there are some significant features still absent from the Master Chief Collection. Alternate keybinds are coming in a future update, and the developers are continuing to work on issues around screen tearing, which I ran into while testing Halo 2’s campaign. Halo Reach’s audio issues remain, and are taking a long time to fix.
Halo 2 doesn’t exhibit identical problems, though its audio isn’t perfect, either. I tested Halo 2 on a low-end system with a GTX Ti graphics card still roughly twice as powerful as the minimum spec stated on Steam , while hardware writer Jorge Jimenez tested on a much more powerful rig, with an RTX Super. Master Chief Collection never made a similarly triumphant return, but it is a far better game than when it launched. The collection is now arguably worth owning an Xbox One for, assuming you like Halo of course, and is now the basis for a series of big Halo 3 throwback tournaments taking place throughout It was a long time coming. Master Chief Collection launched back in November It had been two years since Halo 4 , the first numbered game after Industries inherited the series from Bungie, and one year since the launch of the Xbox One.
There was just one problem. Other players reported similar wait times as well going entire matches with incomplete teams on both sides. Two weeks later things were still a mess. By the following month, Industries was still trying to address these issues with subsequent issues. Matchmaking times improved on average but not for everyone, and once matches completed the game seemed intent on always breaking existing parties apart and sending everyone back to a new queue.

You have just started the game and all you see on the enemy team is a bunch of people who have mastered the game. This is gives a really bad impression and leads to frustration. Forgetting about what feels like a lifetime playing Halo games on Xbox and Xbox , our story with MCC started late last year, when a review copy of the game landed on our digital doormat. We played the game, sampled a variety of different missions from across the four campaigns, and played through the entirety of Halo 2 for the first time in about four years. We were happy. As we said at the time, we weren’t able to get online and play the game with other people in the traditional sense.

Hey folks. I recently made a point to get myself an Xbox One and “get my Halo on”, so I bought MCC and while it’s awesome having all of the campaigns in one place and running nice and smooth, my attempts at multiplayer have been met with tremendous matchmaking wait times. It regularly seems as though I spend at least twice as much time searching for a match as I do playing said match. I’m aware of the bjorked launch this game had, but I would have guessed the matchmaking would work by now.
What gives? It’s still kinda wonky but I’ve been able to get in and play matches. I think it’s a combination of wonkiness and dwindling player base. Multiplayer is more or less perfectly fine now, the issue is player base. I’m sure you could still find a few games in MCC but it would be an effort. It would be nice if they had a “current players” indicator on each playlist or something so I knew not to waste my time trying to find a match in a playlist with no players.
Halo 5 is nice and all, but there’s so much game in MCC, I don’t really get how people could get their fill of it. It never worked perfectly, but there seem to be continued minor updates that release periodically for the game.
